My name is James and I made the Greatest SEO Marketing Guru website ever I also made the theme for the site Social Media Expert

Like most people using “social media” I’m constantly amazed by the amount people seeking advice / how to’s and so on. I’m also heavily amazed by the amount of people offering their services to them. While I realise there is always a need to have some advice with new technology / ways of doing things the social media guru stud guy coaching type thing is a bit extreme no ?

So really what you’re wanting to ask is WTF is social media marketing ?

In a nutshell … its spamming the **** out of your friends initially in the hopes things will take off and you’ll get more people following you. This in turn will lead to every “tweet” / Post / Message you make getting read by an ever increasing number of people.

Wow you make it sound so great where do I sign up?
Well like most things I’d first advise you have a website to redriect your “fans” (people that follow / stalk you) to

This will help and who knows a few might even end up book marking your actual site instead of just seeing the off message from you. I’d also recommend you get and RSS feed onto your site. A what now ? .. ( an RSS feed is simply put … a list of the recent posts / activity on your site) People will see updates from you in an RSS reader of their choice if they use one. I actually being quite computer il… er … literate don’t use one. Why … again its down to time and how much time you have at the end of the day. There are so many posts to read things to check and so on it can be a bit overwhelming.

So you’ve got your site .. you’ve got something that you can drag people back onto your site with (RSS feed) .. what do I do next.

Well you pretty much start telling people about what you do. Its social media … can you be social ? .. can you be social online ( its potentially a lot easier to be social online than in real life) and away you go. Follow people you find interesting .. interact with people … let people know whats happening … open up your “company” to the world and interact. O…. K … you say … erm really thats what its all about.

Interact with people

People may follow you back if you’ve something interesting to say

You’ll follow them back

Connections will be made .. you’ll say hey to them they’ll say hey back

You’ll update info … people will see it .. some might like it and let their friends know

Interact Interact Interact ….

So … erm … that sounds simple enough doesn’t it? This is what social media is about … you’ll have people telling you its all about the number of followers you’ve got following you. NO … this is pure BS for example … I could have 10 people following me who are my customers and who might like to see I’m available for work … or I’m interested in doing XYZ … and there’ll be some interaction … or I could have 10000 people trying to sell their services to me .. following me … me following back … cluttering up my stream ( twitter stream … updates from people ) … which is more useful … well to be honest the 10 people you’ll interact with. Of course if you’re huge and can hire a marketing department and get loads of people involved in your twitter account then go for it. If its just you .. then … erm forget about it … follow people have them follow back or not … and let things happen naturally so to speak.

All this said there are a few things you can do to speed up the interest in you / your product or service …

Special offers … ooooh wow 20% off and save now today only .. <-- you like the look of that no ? well why not make a few discounts available for people. What will it cost you ... hopefully not that much .. you've probably got margins worked out on what you earn / profit and so on already ... so factor in what you've got in your marketing budget as well and go from there.

So all this been said it sounds pretty simple no ? Well hell it is .. its not rocket science ... its basic human interaction ... if you say hi, people will say hi back.

Things not to do:

Don’t spam … don’t spam your product .. don’t spam messages …

Don’t direct message people about your products

Don’t auto message people saying thanks for following

Forget about the .. you can earn $50,000 a day with my social media tool!!! click here to find out more … type offers. They are BS

Don’t read posts online and think they are the number one way of doing things … Trial and error should be heavily involved in your process ( We all make mistakes .. I’ve made them others have made them .. we try and move on )

Do realise that all the social media interaction is free BUT its damn expensive …
1 Tweet – 20 – 30 seconds of your time … (thats nothing you say)
.. reading the tweets of others … add on another bit of time …

We’ve 5 minutes gone just there like that … what have we done .. posted one message read a few others tweets.

Lets speed up things … how? … erm … social media is about building up a following .. interaction … respect (respect is import .. if people like you or your product they’ll help you promote it .. if they don’t .. you’ll have pointless twitter accounts RT’ing (Re Tweeting .. sending one your message to people who follow them) .. all your messages .. end result you’ll pick up useless followers

You will come across the odd thing which takes on the Viral nature … you say something clever .. you write something clever and suddenly lots of people are linking to you RT’ing your message ad so on … GREAT … WOO HOO and I’m happy for you .. but generally you can’t force this to happen it just does and if it does congrats and well done

So this ends part I of maybe a one part article .. maybe I’ll write a bit more ( For most people reading its hopefully DUH! material .. for others hopefully its something of an eye opener to the magic that is Social Media) Let me know what you think

James

(PS: Please note I’ve been really using twitter as my social media tool of example here … similar would apply to facebook and so on)

Time flys when you’re having fun. It also seems to fly when you’re really busy. Its now over 2 years since I registered the domain name gluas on behalf of the GLUAS working group. Points of contact change and people come and go within groups so I was contacted a while back to start making a few updates on the system. Of course given the power I’d like to do a redesign of the site but thats something for another day.

I originally created the logo for GLUAS and I have to admit its one of my favourite logos I’ve created to date.

Integrating the track lines so to speak to the base of the text .. slightly slanted text for speed .. green for the nature of what the system and what it would mean for Galway. The gluas name of course is drawn from the dublin LUAS system only with a Galway based theme.

Recently it would appear that the Galway City Council has voted unanimously to make trams the preferred option for improving public transport in Galway. This I think is great news having had to put up with the bus routes / delays / buses that never showed up in Galway for countless years. (In the end I began walking from work up in Dangan into town regularly).

I’ve also gone ahead and created a Facebook page for Gluas – Gluas Facebook Page so why not fan it today and stay up to date. It simply makes it easier for people to stay informed on matters if they see an update on their stream on Facebook and lets face it .. social media is the way to go on these things. For full updates however go on over to www.gluas.ie for full text on whats been happening. More changes to come on the site soon hopefully.

How long is a piece of string?

One of the most common questions I see on IWF and on boards.ie web design and web development forums is the age old question of what should I be charging?. In the land of the freelancer there seems to be three ways of doing things.

Fixed rate to do a site

Hourly Rate

Make up a Quote on the project

If you’re offering a fixed rate well you should probably have a look at the hourly rate tables. Factor in the amount of work involved and see if you’re in or around your ideal wages.

As to what you should be charging in your hourly rate well you’ve a few things to consider

How many weeks do I want to work a year? (52 weeks).
I Generally go in and say 44. I have my reasoning on this.

One assumes you want 20 days holidays a year correct?
(Thats 4 weeks assuming working week is 5 days)

There are 9 Public holidays in Ireland.
Lets round it to an even 10 and that makes 2 weeks.

New Year’s Day (1 January)

St. Patrick’s Day (17 March)

Easter Monday

First Monday in May, June, August

Last Monday in October

Christmas Day (25 December)

St. Stephen’s Day (26 December)

And you’re saying 4 and 2 is 6 … 52 – 6 = 46 working week
Well I like to factor in sick days / and the unknown. So I throw in 2 weeks extra.
I was knocked flat for a full week with the flu in August

And there you have it we’ve got our 44 weeks in the year. So now we know how many weeks we’ll be working in the year lets do some numbers.

I’m going to assume 5 different figures here. 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 100k.
I’m also going to assume a different number of billable hours and see how that affects things.

What should I charge? Facts / Figures

Ideal Salary

20,000

30,000

40,000

50,000

100,000

Weekly Requirement

455

682

909

1136

2273

Hourly rates

20 Billable Hours

22.75

34.10

45.45

56.8

113.65

30 Billable Hours

15.17

22.73

30.30

37.87

75.77

40 Billable Hours

11.37

17.05

22.73

28.40

56.83

* Figures may be rounded here

Now of course the above table has been kept rather simplistic but its a good basis for things. For example if I know I’m going to have a 2 week project to work on then this equates to 2 full 40 hour weeks work. Looking at the table I decide which is appropriate and I can bill accordingly. That might sound a bit simplistic but doing 1 hour work here and 1 hour work there for a customer means I’m either interrupting my main project or I’ve to get setup with theirs and up to speed again on what I’m doing for them. As such you get charged at the higher hourly rate as its also not guaranteed work (unless of course there is a support agreement in place)

Sample Wages in the web Industry in Ireland

Position

Low End*

High End*

Junior Graphic Designer

€20,000

€25000

Middleweight Graphic Designer

€25,000

€32,000

Senior Graphic Designer

€32,500

€65,000

Creative Director

€50,000

€82,000

Junior Web Designer

€22,000

€30,000

Web Designer

€30,000

€40,000

Senior Web Designer

€40,000

€50,000

Web Developer

€25,000

€55,000

* Please note these figures are rough guides only and no doubt things have taken a hit in recent times.

Back on track to what we should be charging as freelancers. We’ve failed to include various things in these salaries / hourly rates.

Software Costs

Adobe CS4 Premium Web edition – €1,592.42
(Dreamweaver / Photoshop / Flash / Illustrator / Fireworks)
Of course you won’t need to buy this every year BUT it does get upgraded (upgrade costs €785.29)

You’ll probably need a new machine every 2 or 3 years.
Macs are pricey but I don’t think I could use a Windows machine now.
A Mac Book Pro will set you back €1,149 for the base model – €2,299 for the top model.
You may want a desktop machine as well. Again the base model iMac is €1099 – €1799

You’ll also want a backup solution / Harddrives die all the time other wear and tear on your machines

Extended warranties on your gear (at 300 – 500 quid it adds up)

Subscriptions while these aren’t necessary you’ll find they creep in and can be extremely useful
( Basecamp / Dropbox / Freshbooks … at 10 / 20 / 30 quid a month these start to add up rather quickly)

Office rent / space. You need to factor it in in some way.
See my post on the home office setup for my reasonings.

Other overheads … electricity / heat / coffee and biscuits (essentials to the proper running of any office ) / Travel

Server / Hosting / Domains

Training (we all need to allot time to it or we become stale. Whether you pay for it and do a course / take time out you’ve to think about it. Whether a subscription to Lynda or a day course on SEO / Online Marketing you have to factor it into your career development

Our simple hourly figures aren’t so simple anymore.

Of course you can just ignore these extras but if you plan on making a living out of this it all needs to be factored in at some stage.

One can think … well I’ve already got a machine and I can use Gimp for graphics and so on.
Thats fine and I’ve no doubt it works for lots of people. I couldn’t live without the above mentioned.
(I have done it in the past but my working life has gotten so much better since I invested in things)

At the end of the day only you can decide what you want to earn ultimately not to mention what the market can bear and what people are willing to spend on your work. If your work is poor and you’re still learning you should probably be hitting the lower scale and inform your clients you’re starting out. If you’re more advanced well then are you making enough or more from freelancing than you would be in a full time job. If not then are you happy would be the ultimate question ?

I’ll leave you with a few final thoughts.

I am not a student. I can’t make you a website for 50 quid and a 6 pack.
I need to earn a living or else this all just isn’t worth my while.
I am what I would like to think a highly skilled individual as such don’t belittle what I do.

The minimum wage in Ireland is €8.65
A 40 hour week at that will make that €346.
I will not give you a custom built website / Logo / CMS / Theme / Training / SEO work / Link building for that.

So do you agree with my thoughts / has this been useful at all ?
Let me know what you think

(I also know there are various calculators out there that can calculate your idea hourly rate .. thats not exactly where I was going with this post however Freelance Switch would be the prime candidate for this type of calculator)

Its my birthday its my birthday !!! oh wait no its not Its my nephews birthday and he’s a big 1 today. He’s my godson and its times like this that make me homesick.

I’ve lost a client … well no not lost a client … the Galway City Council put the St. Patricks Galway website out for tender and well Impact Media came in and got the contract. They are a large marketing / media company based in Oranmore I believe where I’m from so not surprising for an event such as the Paddys day festival to choose them. It stings a bit losing it but it has been a fun few years being involved with it … making updates … finding out beforehand things that were going to be happening and hanging out with some of the great visitors but such is life.

Here is last years St. Patrick’s Galway logo I designed. It altered only slightly from the original one I created.

It was used in hoodies / branding and so on (its always nice as a mostly webdesign / online graphics guy to see your work in print) ah well best of luck to the Festival and its Organisers. ( I met my best french friend and witness at my civil ceremony Maiwenn during one of the festivals when they were over as part of the twinning for Galway Lorient.

In other news I launched this blog and so far the comments have been positive which I’m very happy about. I’ve launched Devine Building as well.

I love my new website

I received that comment in an email from them and it gives me a good tingly feeling

I’ve also been working on various graphics for blacknight which you can see over on blog.blacknight.com. Its based on a design they had in a Sunday paper.

On top of this Dropped.ie got some new Semantic domain searchy goodness which was fun to do and implement.

All in all a good week lots more done … setting up the new office. Playing IT support for Ze Missus and her new venture as FR Translations and to top it all off it’s been a week of almost no twitter what so ever

My camera is back up and running with its new charger and hence you’re probably seeing so many pictures on this blog that I’ve taken.

Happy Weekend

One thing I hate is when a website goes to all the trouble of making up a nice design (or even just grabbing a template and putting it up) and then they don’t go ahead and create a Favicon or worse still in my mind they use the default one that came with the CMS they are using. ARGH!

So what can you do … well really you’ve no excuse there are a multitude of free online favicon generators out there. I however prefer being able to do things from within my trusty version of Photoshop. I’m running Photoshop CS3 and thankfully there is a nice little plugin for it from the lovely people over at Telegraphics. They have versions of the plugin for both windows and Mac (I’m a Mac) and they also have versions or CS3 and CS4.

So install the plugin .. create your 32×32 pixel image and away you go Click the Save As button from the Format Dropdown choose ICO (Windows Icon) and I normally select Standard format.

Of course you can just go ahead and use PNG graphics for your icons I do believe however you’ll end up no doubt having issues with compatability and this method described here has just worked for me.

All this sounding like too much hastle to you ? well there are loads of free online generators out there

Take this one over at Dynamicdrive Favicon Generator or HTML Kit Favicon Generator

Lastly I might add in order for this favicon to appear on the tab / URL area you’ll need to let browsers know it exists. I recommend uploading it to the root webfolder / on your website calling it favicon.ico for consistancy not to mention some browsers automagically pick up the name and search for it, and you’ll want to add in a small snippet of code to all your webpages

<link rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/favicon.ico" />

And finally some Favicons I’ve created (not to mention the one you’re hopefully seeing above)

So once again we’ve saved the world .. well no … its not made that much difference on the greater scale of things but its a nice little finishing touch to your sites and something you or your customers can kinda go oooh thats cool about

So you’re either working from a home office or you’re thinking about it … or you’re just randomly reading this cus I tweeted it or something

I’ve now been working from a home office for a few years. Before this I tried to do part work from home / part working in the office and it worked fine. I actually ended up being a LOT more productive from home so long as you can make the distinction between home life and working life when working from home. Until now I’ve never had an actual proper home office setup there had always been something there.

I moved over with my wife to Madrid in August 2009, I had taken office space in February/March of last year when I finally decided hello I’m going mad can I have a p please bob. I found a like minded soul Jason Roe and we went looking at office spaces around the place. The time was RIPE for it. The recession was kicking in and people were thrilled to find there was some interest. (Honestly the amount of office spaces for rent I’ve seen I’m just surprised prices weren’t cheaper). In the end after having looked at various places and considered setting up our own co-working space we found a place. Nice location (very nice dead center of Dublin .. well Dublin 2 and right beside FF Headquarters). We moved into the office of Pix.ie and ended up sharing the space with them. There was another arrival Angel of Bohoe and then we were four. It seriously made such a change to my working live. Getting up / having a purpose / having a place to go / having an actual office where I could invite clients… completely AMAZING .. deciding to head for a pint or lunch the normal for most people but WOW. Then came the news in July that my wife Valérie-Anne had a new job in Madrid and we were going moving. I’d spent a long weekend there already and fell in love with the city … so my immediate response was …. O … K …. when do we move (I’ll revert to my previous time now … I’d worked from home in Galway … I worked from home in Dublin …) The common denominator in both places were … they were bedrooms. They included Beds / Wardrobes and honestly after 3 years … it really is about the feng shui of the place. I moved to Madrid and well I realised I couldn’t go on using the laptop / table tops and so on (sure the cat was happy out but I wasn’t being the most productive) Thus beings my trips to IKEA!!!

IKEA = The land of the home office. If you’re on a budget and you want something that looks the Shiny then IKEA is your stop. I ended up buying a desk. It went with the office chair in the apartment and hey presto I had a semi proper home office … but no. We’re still not there yet I had dismantled the bed and stored it away but the mattress being a thing of bulk was left there. Now this is where things boil down to the Feng Shui of the place … its just not right … its the office but its not. Fast Forward 4 months and my wife is laid off. A bit of an oh **** situation where one goes oh .. so … erm .. yeah … about that… do we move .. do we stay!

Well we’ve opted to stay she has gone into French Freelance Translation having worked 6 or 7 years now with various translation companies full time.

The last few weeks has seen us convert the spare bedroom / office into whats mostly a proper office.

Buy 2nd Desk – Check

Buy 2nd Chair – Check (and its a rather nice one pictures to follow)

Buy External Monitor – Check (before you use 2 or 3 monitors it seems like a nice to have once you use it … its a major time saver)

Buy Lamp – Check

Buy 3rd Chair – Well the original one I had was a hand me down left there that I never bothered to replace so now I’m setup in a rather shiny Karsten from IKEA very comfy and I’m a happy camper

Buy Printer / Scanner – Its annoying as I’ve multiples in Ireland but it had to be done and shipping and scanners = not good

Buy 3rd Counter Top for said printer / scanner

And hey presto we’ve got our office setup … two work spaces … lack of non work items …shelve units as well. Is it good for business?

The answer is incredibly … getting up now and going into the office is great its no longer getting up and going into the place I’m going to work from. It feels right. We’ve both got individual lighting. We’ve got our own chairs that we picked (probably one of the most important things) Valérie-Anne’s chair was around the 150 mark … her desk was around the 30 quid mark. I on the other hand went with the expensive desk and he cheaper chair at 70 quid.

All in all its a good feeling … having your own space / place to work from and I’d heartily recommend it if you can. Spend the day dismantling a room and putting together your office furniture. Get rid of the extra crud in your work space and enjoy your home office setup.

Get yourself something fun for the desktop a mascot a keepsake something that makes you smile. Get yourself a sound system if you want and are working alone. And if you’re in a home office get yourself a Pet (if you think you’ll be around a while) they are such a great stress relief.

So there you have it Part I of the home office setup.

I installed the Hybrid Theme Framework the other day and must admit it took me a little while to realise what was going on with it. Once I did however I immediately threw the man the 25 quid subscription fee for access to the forums. Why Pay ? well he’s putting a lot of work into it so he might as well get something back. 25 dollars equates to 17 euro so I’m happy to help and getting support to questions in a timely manner is a major plus for me (he’s rather active on the forums on there as he should be)

So you’re here and you’re probably seeing blue .. a whole lot of blue. Don’t worry it was intentional The design is based on my work site though obviously different colours. (I’ve another site design / branding to do with the same style as this shortly for another personal project … consistency and code re-use should be good). I had wanted to do some retro style design that I was tinkering and playing around with in my head on here but in the end I said screw it. The logo is similar to an earlier version I had on the site with slightly updated colours.

Forbairt Site Design and Colours

So why not let me know what you think add a comment give some feedback. As with most of my personal projects its going to be a Work in Progress.

Pardon the pun of my post title but I thought it appropriate after staring at construction terminalogy the last few days.

So I was approached to do a simple enough move of hosting and a few updates on a website for Deeside Building and this turned into them changing branding / company to Devine Building. They were happy enough with their existing logo and colours but I made a few suggestions and one thing led to another.

Take their old site and see what I changed.

Now I immediately didn’t like the site. I’m not getting a warm vibe from it .. I’m not getting any professional edge to it. I’m not getting hit with what they do apart from the graphic with the keywords. This would have been fine for me a few years back but once you start to consider what you’re trying to do .. impress end users you’ve to change the way you think slightly.

The site had links to the Recent Projects all listed on the one page so the first thing to do was a bit of a rethink of their branding. Now I think their signage works perfectly well on a construction site but once you move over to a computer I found their colours strange to say the least. I suggested toning it down. Now with sites where you’re trying to highlight a product / photo I find that black is a good colour it works well with warm images. ( Take Safari Club as an example of this ). So keeping their logo (slightly updated with the DEVINE wording) I put it against a black background and changed it to white. The front page of the site while linking to Recent Projects / Available Services / Health and Safety .. wasn’t really doing anything and just adding in an extra click to get to what the customer really wants to see the completed projects. So I opted to include a random display of their recent projects on the front page. The other options are still present in the menu so you’re not really losing anything but we’re now showing some high class construction work on the sites front page. I removed the generic house building image as well from the front page and hey presto you’ve got what I think is a rather nice clean and straight to the point website.

The projects were given individual pages. I ended up creating some banner images … got some text for the projects .. added in some nice javascript popup effects for the photos (and some touch up work with the photos removing artifacts in them that take away from the image .. changing the levels on the images and so on)

You can see an example re the artifacts here ( I do love photoshop )

And so to the final design. Simple, clean and hopefully to the point and highlighting their construction work.

So my name is James and I make websites. One of those websites is for Blacknight and its Dropped.ie the Dropped .IE domain list. Now even though I’m working on it I’m addicted to it. I just LOVE seeing what domains have dropped and whats available. I’ve even gone and picked up a few of them myself. (Details to follow when I actually get around to launching the projects they are for).

So my post title was about new features … get on with it you say. Well one of the features was described over on the blacknight blog. Semantic “Funky” Search. So basically .com suggested alternatives have been added in but with a slight twist. It’ll give you examples of other domains based on semantic search so if you go and search for espresso for example you’ll get hit with various search terms related to espresso .. and what is an espresso. Its a coffee.

They aren’t premium domains that you can buy from people. They are domains not registered at all. Handy no?

If premium domains are your thing they are listed there as well towards the bottom of your searches. A bit out of my budget for the most part but I dream of finding a great one going cheap at some stage.

So now you’re not just getting dropped .IE domains. You’re getting suggestions on .com domains that are available and premium domains.

Other nice features available are suggested keywords and county keywords.

From an SEO point of view with the .IE domains you can check on their age, history and from archive.org you can see what was previously on the sites.

So any comments / suggestions feel free to make them. Blacknight are open to suggestions and I’m open to challenged with messing about with the system.
